Our Take: Sacred Weekend
Thelonius Monk
I toyed with the notion of skipping The Weekender today, as most of our readers are celebrating Easter or Passover, two very sacred and meaningful holidays. Somehow talking about jazz seemed to be somewhere between tacky and rude. On the other hand, I did not want you to think that we forgot about you. Plus, I wanted to share some special brochures with you which you may find enjoyable to peruse during the holidays.

So, at the risk of being blasphemous or tempting eternal damnation, below are two links that will take you to the Cruise Brochures for The Jazz Cruise ’19 and Blue Note at Sea ’19. These brochures will be permanently placed on the websites, but I wanted to give you a special advance look.

As you can see The Jazz Cruise ’19 will sail from January 19 – 26, 2019 on Celebrity Infinity and Blue Note at Sea ’19 follows the next week (January 26 – February 2, 2019) on the same ship. More than 200 people sailed on both cruises this year. Doing so in 2019 provides the opportunity to see and hear 170 different jazz musicians, enjoy over 300 hours of jazz, visit 8 different ports of call and enjoy a spectacular 14-day jazz vacation. I will be there for both, but you knew that!

In no way should reviewing these brochures interfere with your worship this weekend or with hunting for Easter eggs or the matzoh, a remarkably similar ritual for both Easter and Passover. The other famously overlapping event is that the Last Supper was a Seder (the Passover meal). That information exhausts my knowledge of the holidays, so I will go back to writing about jazz, something that I love, even if my knowledge there is limited as well.

On behalf of all at Entertainment Cruise Productions, we wish each of you good health and happiness in this very special holiday season.

Thomas Conrad Reviews The Jazz Cruise
Over the years we’ve been fortunate to have many jazz journalists and authors sail with us. This year was no exception. The esteemed writer and critic Thomas Conrad joined us on The Jazz Cruise and reported on the music and the experience for the New York City Jazz Record.

A longtime contributor to Stereophile and JazzTimes, Conrad took in much of the music on board and wrote: “The whole point of this cruise was the breadth and depth of talent on offer.” Read his insightful review here.
